Happy New Year! It’s 2019 – woohoo! I love the New Year – it’s a fresh start and such a great time to revisit your priorities, goals, and routines. It’s a time to set new intentions, recommit to old ones, and let go of the stuff that’s no longer serving you.
Do you have some big goals this year you’re excited about? I hope so! If you’re anything like me, setting big, audacious goals can stir up that old friend, FEAR. If you can relate to this, here’s a quick tip: ask the question, “What goals would I set if I knew I could not fail?” This is a powerful question for recovering perfectionists!
Got your goals? Great! Now let’s talk goal achievement.
Unlock Your Goals
The key to unlocking goal achievement is hidden in your routines. You’ve probably heard the definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Which means, in order to create a new or different outcome, you’ve got to shake things up and do things differently than before.
One time efforts rarely create any significant change. But, small efforts made consistently can. Here are some examples:
- Goal: Double business revenues
- Past Routine: sporadic marketing campaigns
- New Routine: follow a set marketing plan: networking 3x/week, daily social media posts/engagement, monthly marketing campaigns
- Goal: Launch Project XYZ
- Past Routine: work on the project when time permits
- New Routine: time block 1 hour every day first thing in the morning to work on the project
- Goal: Keep a personal budget and save money
- Past Routine: no budget, sporadic reviews of spending
- New Routine: create a monthly budget, manually track spending daily
The Breakthrough: The Bad News
Like anything, change can feel hard at first. If you stick with it, it actually gets a little harder as you break through the inertia and resistance.
The Breakthrough: The Great News
If you power through the initial resistance and stick with it just a little longer, it does get easier. The new routine becomes habitual and starts to feel AWESOME. You’ll wonder how you ever did without it!
The New Routine
You probably already know what you “should” be doing, but you just haven’t gotten those actions into your routine, yet. As you plan for 2019 goals, take a close look at your routines. What’s one change you can make that will help you achieve your big goals? Can you get up an hour earlier? Plan each day the night before?
Start with that one small change and it will set you on a new trajectory. As it becomes automatic in your new routine, add on another small change. Get past the breakthrough point and you’ll love how effortless and automatic these changes will become.
